The Florida Virtual Academy (FLVA) – the state's highest scoring K-8 online public school – received an “A” from the Florida Department of Education for the 2006-07 academic year.
The Florida Department of Education gives every public school an overall grade based primarily upon student achievement data from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). School grades are calculated based on annual learning gains of each student toward achievement of Sunshine State Standards, the progress of the lowest quartile of students, and the meeting of proficiency standards.
As in previous years, the percentage of Florida Virtual Academy students scoring proficient or higher exceeded the state averages in most grades and subjects tested. Students also posted strong learning gains this year. For the fourth year in a row, the Florida Virtual Academy was the top-scoring K-8 online public school in the state.
“Receiving an ‘A' is a great achievement for our school,” said Patty Beitler, Florida Virtual Academy Head of School. “I am very proud of everyone in our school community – the teachers, students, parents, and administrators – who all worked very hard for this grade. This accomplishment demonstrates our commitment to individual student success and overall school performance.”
The Florida Virtual Academy uses the high quality and innovative learning program developed by K12 Inc., a leading national provider of curriculum and services to online public schools.
The Florida Virtual Academy is one of 16 statewide online public schools in the U.S. that provide students with the K12 curriculum; three online public schools located in major metropolitan cities also use the K12 program. The K12 curriculum is currently used by more than 25,000 students and 700 teachers in online public schools in the U.S. Many of the nation's top-scoring online public schools are using the K12 curriculum and school services.
