OHVA's 10th grade students exceed state average in all subjects tested on the Ohio Graduation Tests
Maumee, OH – High school students at the Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA) posted strong scores on the 2007 Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT), according to results recently released by the Ohio Department of Education.
The public eSchool's tenth grade students exceeded the state average in each of the five subject tests by a margin of between 10 and 17 points. A majority of students scored within the top two performance levels—advanced or accelerated—on each of the five subject tests. The school also posted a 100% test participation rate.
This was the first year the Ohio Virtual Academy, a K-11 public eSchool, was eligible to participate in the Ohio Graduation Test. The Ohio Virtual Academy's high school program is in its second year and the school began serving tenth grade students in the 06-07 academic year. Next year, OHVA will complete its grade expansion when they offer grade twelve.
Susan Stagner, Head of School for the Ohio Virtual Academy, who delivered testimony at the State Capitol today before the Senate Finance Committee in support of public charter schools and eSchools, praised the strong test scores.
Stagner told members of the Committee that these scores not only demonstrate hard work by the school's students, teachers, and staff, but they also show that public eSchools continue to work for many Ohio kids.
"These excellent scores by our high school students continue to tell the success story of our school, and our total commitment to academic excellence, high accountability and student learning," said Stagner. "This latest achievement is yet another example of how many public eSchools and public charter schools are delivering high quality results for thousands of Ohio students, regardless of economic, geographic, or academic circumstance."
The Ohio Virtual Academy currently serves more than 4,000 students in grades K-11 across the state. OHVA has been the top-scoring statewide eSchool four years in a row and received an Effective school rating in 2006 from the Ohio Department of Education. OHVA uses the nationally-acclaimed curriculum provided by K12 Inc.—a leading provider of curriculum and services to public schools across the country. OHVA is chartered by the Ohio Council of Community Schools.
The Ohio Department of Education describes the Ohio Graduation Tests as a "key part of Ohio's education reform to establish an aligned system of standards, assessments, and accountability for Ohio schools." Tests in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies make up the OGT.
