HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 2008--K12 Inc. (NYSE:
LRN), the nation's leading provider of K-12 online learning programs,
is announcing its online world language curriculum, powerspeaK12 (C).
powerspeaK12 (formerly Power-Glide, a product developed by
Power-Glide Language Courses Inc. which was acquired by K12 Inc. in
October 2007) offers schools and independent learners a comprehensive
set of 29 courses in multiple levels for elementary, middle, and high
school students (grades 3-12). Languages include Spanish, French,
German, Latin, and Chinese.
The powerspeaK12 courses can be used as self-paced, independent
study courses or as teacher-supported courses. The online delivery
format allows courses to be taught or taken in a classroom, computer
lab, or student's home, providing flexibility to meet teachers' and
students' scheduling and pacing needs. Additionally, the powerspeaK12
courses include tests throughout the content, facilitating the
granting and transfer of academic credit for student course
completions.
powerspeaK12 courses offer an optimal mix of innovative, proven
teaching methods that are integrated and woven together to give
students a complete world language learning experience. Students are
guided toward proficiency in languages by reinforcing listening,
speaking, reading, and writing skills with increasing emphasis as
students progress through course levels. The courses use rich
graphics, audio, video and music, and include engaging games and
culturally relevant activities that keep students eager and excited to
learn.
powerspeaK12's signature activity, the "Diglot Weave," involves
presenting students with a story in their native language, and
gradually transitioning words and phrases from the story into the new
language. This learning process teaches helps students fit together
unfamiliar words and phrases with those that are familiar, thereby
making it easier to comprehend and retain understanding of new words.
The powerspeaK12 courses meet the national standards outlined by
the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the
nation's preeminent organization dedicated to the improvement and
expansion of language instruction and learning. powerspeaK12 is also
accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS).
K12 is currently showcasing powerspeaK12 at the 2008 Virtual
School Symposium Conference (VSS), a three-day convention held this
year at the Renaissance Phoenix-Glendale Hotel in Glendale, AZ. The
VSS conference is the nation's premier online learning and virtual
school conference and is hosted by the North American Council for
Online Learning (NACOL), the leading industry organization for K-12
online learning.
