Chandler student named U.S. Presidential Scholar

May 6, 2014

CHANDLER, Ariz., May 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Arizona Virtual Academy, a tuition-free, online public school serving students in grades K-12, announced today that one of its students, Anna Han, has been named a United States Presidential Scholar.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars makes selections based on academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

Anna is a talented pianist who qualified for this honor by not only meeting the specifications above, but also through her participation in the National YoungArts Foundation's nationwide YoungArts™ competition.

"AZVA has allowed me to prioritize my time around my piano practice and performances," said Anna. "I've had a wonderful counselor who has helped me with so many recommendations and applications."

Anna will be attending The Juilliard School next year for piano studies.

She has several performances taking place before beginning her studies, including a performance with Verde Valley Sinfonietta in Sedona and at the Shandelee Music Festival in the Catskill Mountains. Anna will also perform at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as a part of the Presidential Scholar award ceremonies.

Arizona Virtual Academy provides an active, supportive community, a range of extracurricular activities, and a robust Advanced Learner Program, which focuses on helping students reach their natural potential through a dynamic learning environment.

"We are so proud of Anna's work and thrilled she is a part of our community," said Cindy Wright Carter, head of school of Arizona Virtual Academy. "Our school is devoted to empowering students to think critically, achieve academic success and personal growth. Anna is an amazing example of how that is possible. "
